Lovefly® Blog - Engine Failure

Been monitoring the news since United Airlines flight 328 suffered engine problems recently...

Some of the headlines are nothing short of shameful.  For example, one media source wrote, 'United Airlines Boeing suffers catastrophic engine failure.'

I am not denying that the engine images have been quite dramatic.  However, the use of the word 'catastrophic' is too much in my opinion. That word is used to sell papers/encourage downloads.

The main problem for me is that the headlines lack perspective.  These engines are just so amazing, powerful and reliable.  Look at the picture above. I cannot tell which engine type it is but, just look at the sheer size of it.  These engines are a feat of science which is why incidents like this are so, so rare.

So, what can you do:
  1. Stop looking at the images as they just 'feed the fear.'
  2. Remember that all pilots are trained to deal with an engine failure and that is exactly what these pilots did.
  3. There are so many back up procedures and processes in place.  When something as rare as this happens, we all know what to do.
  4. This incident will be investigated. All findings will be public. All findings and recommendations will be shared within the global aviation community.

Lovefly® Blog - The Five Pillars

Join me February 14th 1000 UK on a Facebook Live which will be streamed through our Facebook group, 'Lovefly Overcome Fear of Flying' Here is a link

This is a newly relaunched group which we have created to provide continuing support for anyone with a fear of flying.  Please join me and I will share what I have learned by being a fear of flying coach for over 25 years...

The Five Pillars

Pillar no.1 – Fear of flying is not innate.

Pillar no.2 – Your commercial aviation knowledge has some gaps!

Pillar no. 3 – Fear of flying is not irrational, sort of.

Pillar no.4 – As humans, we learn to laugh at ourselves.

Pillar no.5 – You are disrespecting yourself.

These are the areas that I will be covering in my 30 minute Facebook Live... in more detail than my book.    Hope you can join us...

Take care,

Paul & Lovefly Team

Lovefly® Blog - How Fear of Flying Created and Maintained

You know that your fear of flying has been created at some point in your life...it is not something  you arrived into the world with.  This you know.
But how does it actually get created?

My very strong belief is that fear of flying is learned - just like you have learned anything.

For example... Typing
  1. In the beginning, you cannot type
  2. You 'make do' by doing one or two finger typing
  3. This, you decide, is not particularly efficient or helpful to your life
  4. So, you decide to do something different...
  5. Then, you might take some lessons, it is clunky but you are starting to learn
  6. You get quicker, you must practice, repeat it and give it effort and time
  7. In time, you can type and it is hard to type the old way - but, you must practice it frequently to keep the learning in place
  8. It is now a pattern, a habit that is carved into your brain and your muscle memory
I would put to it to you that, learning a fear of flying is the same.  You learn it at some point - you might not remember the first lesson or, maybe you do.

Then you maintain this new fear you have learned by practicing and repeating.  This then becomes a habit or a pattern that is learned by your brain and body.

Here is the good news...You can always learn new methods.  My top tip of all top tips when it comes to starting a new habit is...to Start!

Many people just avoid it. But,  you are not that person...you are reading this.  You have started and are well on your way to getting rid of this old habit and nurturing a new habit or pattern.

Keep going :)
