Lovefly® Blog - United Airlines Updates Window Shade Policy

United Airlines have updated their policies around electronic equipment and window blinds as reported in this blog here.

Window Blinds

During taxi, take off and landing, most airlines insist you have the window blinds up to make sure that you can see what is going on in the unlikely event of an evacuation.  This is because, should you need to suddenly leave the aircraft, your eyes are adjusted to the outside conditions.  So, United Airlines making this a rule amounts to them doing the same as every other airline.  For people with a fear of flying, you might prefer the blinds were down so you can block out what is going on?  The problem with this is that you can become more disorientated as you are robbing yourself of your vision - which for the sighted, is how we help to know whether we are balanced.  Also, having a view of the outside can help you to appreciate the magic of being able to fly and the views...

Electronic Equipment

Use of electronic equipment was strictly controlled for a long time.  This was because we didn't really know if mobiles etc. would affect the flying instrumentation.  The electrics were always shielded but we wanted to be sure.  Now, most aircraft, you can listen to music, podcasts, watch videos from beginning to the end of the flight.  A lot of airlines, you can use your phone.    Personally, we used to love the fact that when you flew, you could switch off from the outside world. But now we know it doesn't affect anything, use of electronics will become more and more common - sadly!  Now it will be like travelling on the train with those loud mouthed people conducting work whilst travelling - and us having to listen to it all!

Take care,

Lovefly® Team
