Lovefly® Blog - Fear of Heights

Fear of Heights...

Did you know that many people we have spoken to, over our 25 years' experience, have a fear of heights?  Not everyone, just some.  Some of these people with a fear of heights are pilots.

Does that surprise you?

Many pilots have told me that climbing a ladder is the most terrifying thing that they do. So, why doesn't flying at five miles up in the air trigger the same feelings?

Because, you are not really five miles up in the air. You are on a firm surface which is what I would say is as firm as the Earth.  Imagine the physics...400 tons of aircraft, flying at 500 miles an hour...The sheer power of lift that is keeping us up there.  It is beyond comprehension, almost.

When you walk about an aircraft, you are on a firm surface.  It is like walking around the deck of a ship which is five miles above the ocean floor.  You are on a firm surface.  It is not the same as climbing up a ladder or, looking over a cliff edge.  These are examples of how our fearful minds can trick us.  Something to think about?

Take care,

Lovefly® Blog - Challenge or Threat

Challenge or Threat?

I was in a clubhouse room this week listening to various authorities talking about facing fear. One individual summed up something brilliantly, something which I have attempted to explain for years.

It went something like this:

When you are facing something which is potentially scary for you, what do you think about it. Essentially, two people facing the same thing will have completely different reactions.  For example, if you are about to get on a roller coaster and you are scared, what happens next to you depends on one thing.  Do you consider the roller coaster a threat or a challenge?  This fundamental difference in attitude is critical. If you consider it a threat,  you will have adrenaline and will probably want to run away. If you consider it a challenge, you will have adrenaline and move towards the roller coaster.  The Doctor, that explained this, did so much more eloquently than this.

However, it got my thinking about fear of flying again and how important it is to get our minds right. To get our thought processes helping us move towards the fear. So, perhaps, this is a good reminder then?  Maybe, if you were to think of flying as facing a challenge, not a threat?  You might still have similar feelings but, you would be in an action mindset rather than a run away mindset?

Challenge or threat...you decide.

Lovefly® Blog - The Power of Yet

The power of the word YET.

Been thinking about this recently...Many people tell us:

'I don't like flying...'

'I am not sure I will ever truly like flying...'

Growth Mindset Thinking

Professor Carol Dweck teaches us the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset. This is covered in our latest book by the way. (download for free below)  The most powerful way to think about your fear of flying could be this...

  • You were not born with a fear of flying, you learned it.  It is never too late to learn new habits and behaviours
  • Every time you say to yourself, 'I am not feeling safe when I fly' or, 'I don't like flying.' Please add YET in your head or, out loud to the end of the sentence.
This is a very powerful word. It offers hope and gives you permission to accept that you are 'work in progress.'  Beating a fear is a journey, a process - it takes a different amount of time for each person.  This is okay.  Don't give up.

Perhaps, one day, you will love flying but, not quite, yet.

Take care,
